Planetary Health Alliance European Hub
The
Planetary Health Alliance (PHA)
is a consortium of over 340 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government entities from around the world committed to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts. The PHA supports the dissemination of new research, the development and curation of foundational education materials, and the bringing together of communities of practice around the world.
The PHA Europe Hub convenes organizations within the 44 European countries, including European Union Member States. We also welcome members of the EU-associated Overseas Countries and Territories. Currently, multiple organizations are a member, and we continuously welcome new organizations to join the hub.
Planetary Health
Human populations are healthier than ever before, but we exploited the planet at an unprecedented rate to achieve this. The scientific consensus is clear : on our current trajectory, we will put even more pressure on the Earth’s natural systems, resulting in continuing rising temperatures, more extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, shortages of arable land and fresh water, and other impacts on our ecosystems. These changes in our global environmental ecosystems pose significant challenges on sustainable development and health of all living beings on this planet.
"Planetary health is a holistic systems view of the world, recognizing the interconnectedness of the health and well-being of all life on Earth, and the need to regenerate natural systems, rather than simply minimizing harm." (Martens, 2023)
